Whose ready for a ghost story? When I partnered with Bossier Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Hillsboro, Texas, I started thinking about all the places in Texas that I have always wanted to go. Then the kids started talking about what they wanted to be for Halloween. I can not believe it is even close to time to start thinking about Halloween. With Texas still on my mind, I started thinking about the different haunted places in Texas that would be fun to visit around Halloween.
Haunted Places in Texas
Holland Hotel: The Holland Hotel, in Alpine, has a lot of stories of people seeing spirits and interacting with them. There are many stories about different ghosts that are seen at the hotel. One of the most terrifying story talks of a lady who came to stay at the hotel after a wedding. She came into the room and, on the floor found a photograph. The photo was an older photo and seemed out of place and odd. It was of a woman wearing a paper mache mask and her child. The lady dismissed it and went about getting ready for bed.
As the lady started to nod off to sleep, she started to hear a scratching sound from the bathroom. Thinking that it was a rodent, the lady went to the bathroom, opened the door and there was no animal there. Leaving the light on in order to scare the critter away, she tried to go back to sleep. As soon as she got into to bed, she started to hear the scratching noise again. She looked at the door, to see the mask being pushed out from under the door. As the lady tried to reach for the mask, it disappeared. It’s no wonder the lady left and did not stay the night.
Gillespie Mansion: Gillespie Manson was nicknamed, Midget Manson, because the owners both had dwarfism. They lived there with their two average sized daughters. Mr. Gillespie would not tolerate the idea of living in a house that was made for “normal” sized people. He spend his fortune trying to change the house to have low ceilings and miniature everything, including toilet seats and door knobs. He also built a tiny house on the property and hired average sized to work for them. There are 2 stories about what happened, both of them are tragic. In one version, Mr. Gillespie went crazy and murdered his entire family by slitting their throats. He dragged them all to the closet upstairs before before shooting himself. When the police found the bodies in the closet, there were also notes scratches on the wall and notes in blood. In the second version, the second version tells a story of the servants reaching a breaking point after years of abuse. They murdered the family with an ax and drug their bodies to the closet before lighting the mansion on fire and burning to death in the flames.
Locals say that they can hear scratching coming from the walls next to the closet where the family took their last breaths. Some people claim that they can hear screaming coming from the house, even though it has been vacant for many years. Some think it is mean old Mr. Gillespie waiting to get more “normal” sized people in his home in order to bring the same horrors onto them. Others think it is the family warning everyone away.
Stewart’s Mansion: Stewart’s Mansion is one of those abandoned houses that looks beautiful and makes you wonder what the story is behind it. It was built where there was a very bloody battle between Karankawa Indians and pirates. The Karankawa Indians were an indigenous cannibalistic tribe. It was not surprising that their anger was fierce when they were invaded by Jean Lafitte, an infamous pirate and his army of over 1000 men.
Of course, with a history like that, it is no wonder that there are reports of disembodied voices and ghostly apparitions. Some people even say that the mural featuring pirates change position when no one is looking. Late at night, if you listen carefully, it is said that you can hear the beating drums and chants from Lafitte’s slaves performing voodoo rituals.
Supposedly, before the pirates were ran off the island b the US Army, that Lafitte buried his treasure somewhere near Stewart’s Manson. While no one can say if these stories are true, entering the house, behind all of its beauty, the history of the brutality can be felt.
So, whose up for a ghost adventure?
