Driving when in mountainous regions can be a little tough any time of year. Winter mountain time driving can be even more difficult. Here are a few tips to make sure that you make the most out of your trip safely.
The first thing I definitely want to mention when driving in the mountains is to take it slow. The speed limits that they post are for when the conditions are dry. You will need to take caution especially of the roads have any kind of water, slush, snow or even ice.
Even if you have never had a used for chains when doing mountain driving, it is probably a great idea to have some with you. You never know when the area or terrain will have cause for you to use them. Also, when it comes to your tires, make sure that there is a good amount of tread on them. Travel up in mountain regions requires that you definitely have great traction.
Make sure that things such as wiper blades, fluids, battery, defrosting and heating systems are all working properly. If not you will need to get them replaced before heading out.
The radio and also calling into 511 (Travel Guide Line for Motorists) will be your saving graces when it comes to knowing what areas are looking like before you head out. There will be no delay in shutting down parts of roads if they get too bad. You will need to know your route that you want to travel and other routes just in case.
Truckers will be using these roads for travel, too. So you need to be aware of them, but also take note in what they are doing. If they are getting off the road before a pass on the route, I would probably follow suit.
Lastly, having a four-wheel drive vehicle does not make you invincible when it comes to travel in the mountains. You will still have to use just as much caution and think before attempting anything that you are not sure of on your route.
These areas are beautiful to visit and I definitely recommend heading to New York to see all it has to offer. Just be safe while you are travelling!
