While many people know that they need antifreeze in the winter, many people do not realize the importance of it all year round. While you don’t necessarily need antifreeze in the summer, you do need some sort of coolant. If you are using just water, be sure to have it flushed and put antifreeze in during the winter or else you can cause serious damage to the engine. Whether you are using antifreeze or water, you want to make sure that the coolant is filled because without it, you can overheat the engine, causing serious issues. These issues can be more expensive than the car is worth, resulting in needing a new car much sooner than you had planned.
Why You Need Coolant
Coolant, whether antifreeze or water is important because the engine runs hot. The coolant runs through the engine and keeps it from overheating or cracking. When you use antifreeze all year round, you do not need to worry about the engine block freezing either. It is best to use a mixture of 50/50 of antifreeze and water. This gives the most amount of protection.
You should check the antifreeze several times a year, but usually, the antifreeze doesn’t need to be changed for 2-3 years. If the antifreeze is low, you need to fill it. If it continues to be low, it usually means there is a leak, and you should take the car to the dealership in order to have it fixed.
